I painted this Painting “Speicherstadt Hamburg” not only because of its impressive Gothic Revival Structure but also because it is interesting and noteworthy and last but not least, it is close to my heart, my original home turf, Hamburg.
Did you know that the Speicherstadt is the world's largest port warehouse complex? Its area spans over 260,000 square meters. Located in Hamburg’s busy port, it was built from 1885-1927 on a long group of narrow islands in the Elbe River. The red brick buildings are supported by thousands of oak poles. I am glad to say that this representation of human history became a UNESCO heritage listed Site. With its outstanding buildings and many winding channels and bridges, Chile House, the modern HafenCity and the famous “Elphy” neighboring it. It surely is a sight worth seeing.
